Remember the dreams we nurtured as children. A doctor, a dancer, a boxer… Today as adults, we have stopped dreaming.. dreaming is for children and not for grown ups. Our children are today growing with that same true free spirit… that indomitable spirit which only a child can possess. When do we adults kill that spirit of that child? Every moment when we say “Don’t do this, don’t sit here, don’t touch that, don’t go there etc etc.
We foist all our unfulfilled dreams on the children. When the child is in the garden climbing a tree, we send them to school where he is shown a book with a picture of tree in it and said this is a tree.
Studies and experiments reveal the innate goodness of children and their natural yen for compassion and altruism. We just need to nurture those tendencies and give the right direction and support during the learning years.
“We talk much about physical hygiene, but not so much about mental hygiene. We have seen the disastrous consequences of failing to live close to Nature. Global Warming is one such disaster. We should live in awareness that we are interdependent with all beings and the environment.” Dalai Lama
Where the child is without fear and the head is held high
Where knowledge is free
Where the school has not been broken up into classes
By narrow domestic walls
Where ideas come out from the inquisitiveness of the child
Where tireless investigation and experimentation leads the children towards perfection
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit
Where the mind is led forward by quest
Into ever-widening thought and action
Into that school of freedom, my children, let us work together
